No I.D. On Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3, “[It’s] Like 808s & Heartbreak But More Hip-Hop”

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

While there is no release date in sight, the anticipation continues to bubble on Jay-Z’s forthcoming album, Blueprint 3. Kanye West mentor and frequent collaborator No I.D. recently spoke on the disc, hinting on how it’s shaping up.

In an interview with Jasiri X, the Chicago producer, who also worked on Jay’s American Gangster, said that him and Kanye are collaborating on Blueprint together.

“I’ma say we were doing Blueprint 3 when we did ‘Heartless,’” he said. “’Heartless’ made 808s and Heartbreak happen and all that is related but everything in Blueprint 3 is like 808s and Heartbreak but more hip-hop. So they related than Jay brings it around to make it hip-hop credible.”

No. I.D. is confident about the fans’ reaction to Jigga’s 10th solo album. “[There’s] some records on there,” he smirked. “That record is also gonna be a record that grows on people in a certain way and in a certain amount of time it’s gonna be a full-fledged classic.”

As of press time it is still uncertain what label Blueprint 3 will be released on, Def Jam or Hov’s Roc Nation label on Live Nation.

Snoop Dogg Denies Attacking Fan At Concert

Snoop Dogg has denied striking a fan — who is suing the rapper for millions of dollars — with a brass-knuckle microphone at a 2005 Seattle concert.

In a Santa Monica, California, court on Monday, Snoop (real name: Calvin Broadus), claimed he went straight to his tour bus immediately after Richard Monroe Jr. rushed the stage at the performance, according to The Associated Press.

Monroe has claimed that he was attacked and had alcohol poured on him during Snoop's performance of "Gin and Juice." According to the rapper's lawyers, Snoop's bodyguards thought the MC was being attacked when Monroe jumped onstage. A video was played in court, and Snoop identified the people involved in the scuffle as being security staff employed by the Game (who also performed at the concert).

That part of the trial brought a moment of levity to the proceedings: When one person on the screen was difficult to identify, Snoop said to his attorney, "Man! I can't [make] it out — a lot of bald heads."

Monroe claimed he was hit by a microphone and attacked by bodyguards while onstage, and woke up nude, in a pool of blood, after the incident. He said he had gone onstage after what he thought was a request for audience members to join the performers.

Snoop testified that he did not hit the fan, and responded to the claims by telling the courtroom, "The best way for the injuries not to have occurred was for him to stay in his seat and enjoy the show like the rest of the fans."

Monroe's lawyers claimed that the rapper did not have a clear recollection of the events that evening, but the judge did not allow them to ask Snoop if he had used drugs during the concert.

Monroe, who initially brought the case to court in 2006, is seeking $22 million in damages. A 12-person jury will determine whether he receives any money; the trial is expected to last throughout the week.

Rick Ross' 'Valley Of Death' Was Intended For Jay-Z

If not for one of Rick Ross' close affiliates, he might have been one song short for his album Deeper Than Rap.

When DJ Toomp, co-producer of "Valley of Death," first heard the track, he thought about one MC — one rapper perfect to spill rhymes all over the record: Jay-Z.

"I built an empire so crazy down here," DJ Toomp said via cell from Atlanta. "Me and some of my other producers are putting our heads together. I been doing it for 22 years all by myself. At the end of last year, I decided to go round up some producers — we all put our heads together on that joint and that's what it was.

"They brought [a rough version of the 'Valley of Death' beat] to me and I ended up fattening it up," Toomp, credited as the record's producer, explained. (Kevin "Khao" Cates co-produced.) "I heard the whole idea and originally I was gonna give that to Jay-Z, believe it or not."

A mutual friend of Ross and Toomp's convinced the producer to let the Big Boss hear the track before Hov, and Toomp caught Ross' ear during a listening session at his house.

"We went to Ross' crib in Atlanta. I played that beat and he lost his mind," Toomp recalled. "I played a few beats, but that particular one, he was like, 'That's it, man.' We was just kicking it. ... He played a few joints off the album to show me what direction he was going and immediately I knew what to give him based on what's on his playlist. He started mumbling ideas. I knew he was going in the right direction."

One of the last steps to finishing the song was getting the hook down. "The singing with the lady's voice — everybody thinks that's a sample, nah," Toomp clarified. "That's a woman that sings on a lot of Snoop's sh--. The way we EQ'ed it sounds like a sample, but nah. It has a few strikes behind it. That's just a person singing on the mic — it just has that effect on it."

Mary J. Blige was originally considered to sing the chorus.

"I heard that too, man," Toomp said of the rumor. "I didn't know what happed to it. In some way I wanted to work with Mary — that would have been great, man, to know I got Mary J. on one of my tracks."

Snoop Dogg Being Immortalized in Wax

Snoop Dogg is getting waxed! No, not that kind of waxed. He is set to become the first living rapper to be immortalized for Madame Tussauds famous wax museum.

"Fa shizzle dizzle I said yes when asked," the rapper tells PEOPLE. "I'm honored! The D O double G got a double."

The rapper-turned-reality star of Snoop Dogg's Father Hood and MTV's Dogg After Dark will have his figure unveiled Monday, April 20 at Madame Tussauds in Las Vegas. The figure will stand in the "On Stage" area.

Snoop Dogg will be the third rap icon on display at one of the famous museums. A shirtless and tattooed Tupac Shakur wax figure resides in Vegas, while Biggie Smalls's figure is in New York. Both rappers received the honor after they died.

As for Snoop, whose $300,000 statue will sport his trademark braided cornrows, "He was on high demand at our museums" says Roxanne Holland of Madame Tussauds. "When we asked guests who they wanted to see next, Snoop was at the top of the list."

The rapper also didn't mind the fuss over him. "When our team from London met with Snoop in Hollywood, he gave us about two hours and we took nearly 200 measurements – matched eye, skin and hair coloring," says Holland. "He gave our sculptors the chance to experience his personality and nuances. He was an absolute joy!"

Snoop says the honor means a lot to him and he plans to be on hand in Vegas to celebrate the unveiling. "It's real to be immortalized [in wax] in the ranks with President Barack Obama," he says.
