Raekwon Talks Aftermath Deal, Busta Rhymes’ Decision To Leave Label

Monday, April 27, 2009

In an interview with XXLMag.com, Wu-Tang rapper Raekwon spoke about his relationship with legendary West Coast producer Dr. Dre, and the near deal with his label, Aftermath Records.

While the partnership fell through, with Rae eventually signing to EMI to release his highly-anticipated follow up to 1995’s classic disc, Only Built For Cuban Linx, the Staten Island rapper said he is unsure if longtime associate Busta Rhymes’ decision to leave Aftermath was affected by his contract never materializing. Bussa Bus was originally slated to executive produce the project, although he no longer holds the position.

“Busta left after our situation was already not gonna happen,” he told XXL. “Busta might have felt like he was’ getting the proper energy he needed to get, so really one ain’t have nothing to do with two, but you never know at the end of the day, you know what I mean. I don’t know, I can’t call that.”

Despite never inking with Dre’s imprint, Rae managed to secure some heat from the Doc for OB4CL 2, along with a slew of other super producers including Pete Rock, J Dilla, Marley Marl, The Alchemist, Eric Sermon and Wu maestro The Rza.

OB4CL 2 is currently scheduled for August 11 release date.

DMX Rep Denies Rapper’s Involvement In Rehab Show, Talks Jail Release Date

DMX’s publicist has barked back about reports that the troubled rapper will be appearing in the new season of VH1’s Celebrity Rehab.

On Friday (April 24) gossip blogger Perez Hilton said the X would be checking in to the facility, with Bob Forrest, the show’s drug counselor, confirming the Yonkers MC’s attendance. Meanwhile X’s rep released a statement this morning saying the reports are false.

“Several media outlets have reported that my client Earl Simmons, aka DMX has signed on to appear in VH1’s Celebrity Rehab reality show,” Pam Pinnock said. “These reports are false and Mr. Simmons has not agreed to appear in any reality show. Mr. Simmon’s is currently serving a 90-day jail sentence at Tent City Jail in Arizona. He has expressed great appreciation to the overwhelming amount of support he has received from his fans during this difficult time. He would like his fans to know that he is taking this time to focus on his personal as well as spiritual growth, and is looking forward to being released soon.”

Although he won’t be hitting the small screen, Pinnock told XXL that the rapper/actor is currently in talks to star in a new movie when he is released. She did not give any further details about the role.

As previously, X’s time behind bars for drug, theft and animal cruelty charges aren’t going too smoothly. The Ruff Ryder was put on 23-hour lockdown last February for assaulting an officer and was accused of attacking another officer, which he later denied. Pinnock told XXL that DMX has been charged in the incident which has delayed his expected release date from prison. She says he may now possibly be freed on May 19.

Lil Wayne Producers Cool & Dre Say Rebirth Has Some Rock, Some Rap

Even the biggest MC in the game right now gets hungry for new music. "He just told us, 'Feed me, feed me,' " Cool of the producing duo Cool & Dre laughed about Lil Wayne. The twosome have been busy putting together tracks for Wayne's Rebirth LP, which is slated for a summer release.

"The best way to describe the Rebirth record is that it's a Lil Wayne record," Cool's partner Dre said. "It's where Lil Wayne is right now in his life and career — he's expressing himself musically. 'Prom Queen' came out and that's a rock record and so everybody is like, 'He's putting out a rock album and he's on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.' Yeah, there's some rock records on there, but there's also some records where he's rapping. It's a Lil Wayne album. It's what you expect from Lil Wayne, where he's at creatively.

"It's almost like where Outkast was when they made Aquemini," he continued. "It's still a rap album, but was it really a rap album compared to all the other rap albums at that time? André Benjamin was evolving artistically to where he's at now — Wayne is doing the same thing, and he's not afraid to show you his growth. It's one thing we respect about him, and we feel it's something that everybody else should respect about him ... hes shows no fear. To put himself out there, you're watching someone as they progress in their career.

"He paid his dues, he put out a million mixtapes and he put out classic albums ... Rebirth is going to be another classic album," he added.

Cool & Dre were inspired to take a new musical direction with Wayne after seeing his rock rendition of "Got Money" on "Saturday Night Live."

"His intensity was like [being at] a rock concert," Cool said of the performance. "He had a band behind him. It inspired me and Dre to do a lot of intensity-driven records."

"Anthemic records," Dre echoed. "We wanted to create music for him that could stand beside his performance, which is tough. The way he was performing, I can only compare him to Freddie Mercury or Jim Morrison, guys that put it all out onstage. We felt like, 'Yo, we feel we could provide you with music that could stand alongside what you do as a performer onstage.' He was like, 'Yo, get me some stuff.' "

And the two friends have been feeding Weezy ever since. That's Dre singing on "Hot Revolver," a record that could possibly have been Rebirth's first single if it had not been leaked — although without any promotion, the song charted on iTunes and the Billboard Hot 100. Cool & Dre did not know exactly what other songs of theirs Weezy would be using, but they had a good idea — however, Cash Money wants to keep the titles of the newly recorded material under wraps.

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

Juelz Santana is still prepping his Regan Era mixtape and upcoming official LP for Def Jam, Born to Lose, Built to Win. But he's also putting out the debut of his group the Skull Gang in a couple of weeks. The squad has an independent deal through Koch Records, and the video for their first single "I Am the Club" should drop any day.

"I pushed the button," Santana said on the set of the video for the Gang's "I Am the Club" in New York. "At the same time, it was that hard work. We did the mixtape; it got a great response when it came out.

"We did a lot of work when it came to the Internet. Koch, they took a liking to it," he added. "They always did business with me, Jim [Jones], Cam. They wanted that fresh new energy, and at the same time, they saw the vision and believed in it. They wanted to give them a shot. We got the album coming out May 5. It's real crazy."

The Gang consists of Richmond Rabb, Un Kasa, Deniro, John Depp, Starr, Riq Rose and his nephew, 10-year-old Ja'Quaye (yeah, little Ja from videos like "S.A.N.T.A.N.A.").

"Skull Gang album, we here, the album is crazy," Santana professed. "Collectively, we all come from different areas. Like I tell people, I never try to copy what the Diplomats was. This would have [come] about even if me and Cam still would have been doing business. ... This was destiny."

Juelz has been announced as one of the performers for his hometown radio station Hot 97's annual mega-concert, Summer Jam. Jim Jones is also on the bill. Expect to see Juelz's Gang as well as Jim Jones' Byrd Gang and Freekey Zekey's 730 Dips clique all onstage.

"Ah, man, it's beautiful," he said about what it looks like to see everyone's crew onstage together. "That was the whole plot. For everybody, for all of us to have — how can I put it? Roc-A-Fella, Bad Boy and Death Row — we all bosses in our own right. We got the swag, we got the energy.

"That's what I feel the whole idea of it is," he added. "To get us to the point where everybody's team is solidified and all the bosses are still comfortable with each other and we can all come to the table. Roc-A-Fella, Death Row and Bad Boy, imagine what the tour would have been like."
