How Hip Hop gives Cubans a voice

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Hip hop is one U.S. commodity that has made it past the trade embargo to Cuba.

Cuba has developed a homegrown rap movement, inspired by the sounds and fashions of U.S. hip hop. But what makes Cuban rappers different is that rather than celebrating bling, girls and guns, their lyrics address social issues in a country where free speech is tightly controlled.

Cuban rap began to surface in the 1990s, a grassroots affair, with songs recorded in rappers' bedrooms and distributed on cassette tapes.

The island's fledgling hip hop scene was given a boost in 1999, when it was endorsed by the government as "an authentic expression of Cuban Culture."

In the following years the government set up the Cuban Rap Agency (CRA) to promote the scene, as well as a record label, "Asere Productions," and a rap magazine called "Movimiento."

Government approval helped Cuban hip hop emerge from the underground, but some see that endorsement as a gilded cage. Formed in 1996, rap duo "Doble Filo" ("Double Edged") have been part of the Havana scene since the beginning and work with the Cuban Rap Agency. But rapper Irak Saenz admits there are contradictions in being part of the system.

"It does limit our creative freedom," he told CNN. "The CRA has an agenda that goes with the government's agenda. It doesn't limit me but it does force me to be creative in how I express my ideas."

Along with fellow Cuban rap duo "Los Aldeanos" ("The Villagers") "Doble Filo" work with U.S. hip hop audio/visual label, Emetrece Productions.

But "Los Aldeanos", who formed in 2003, are part of a younger generation of Cuban rappers. They don't belong the CRA, and nor do they want to. They are defiantly underground and outspoken.

"Hip hop is an art form speaks the truth about how people are living," says Aldo Rodriguez, one half of Los Aldeanos.

Their track "Niñito Cubano" is about a young boy growing up during Cuba's "special period", when the fall of the Soviet Union brought hardship to the island.

Their forthright lyrics about life in Cuba don't make them any friends among Cuba's authorities, and that limits their opportunities on the island.

"Our lyrics don't always go with the standard Cuban rhetoric and often that won't get airplay," says Rodriguez. "I can be famous in other countries, but here they won't let me play a concert in a theater."

Doble Filo's Saenz has performed the U.S. with fellow Cubans "Obsesion", a tour that included playing on the same bill as U.S. rap stars Kanye West and The Roots.

He says that where his generation of rappers was forced to limit the way it talked about the realities of daily life, the new generation is bolder with its lyrics.

Bian Rodriguez, also known as El B, the other member of "Los Aldeanos," says hip hop gives voice to the concerns of ordinary Cubans.

"People tell me they need this music, not just because they can identify with what we are saying, but because they feel that maybe we can say things they might be afraid to say publicly," he told CNN.

Like most other Cuban rap groups, "Los Aldeanos" aren't yet in a position to make a living from their music. El B has won Cuba's Red Bull freestyle rapping championship three years in a row, but he still has a day job as a primary school teacher.

A lack of funds and equipment means the island's hip hop producers have to use a certain amount of ingenuity when it comes to recording their music. Doble Filo's producer Edgaro explains that in the group's early days, he would make tracks by looping the last few bars of songs on cassette tapes.

These days, Edgaro produces songs on his PC, but the software is pirated from copies brought into the country and circulated on the streets. It simply isn't available in the stores.

As the scene develops the groups are getting more ambitious. Doble Filo are now incorporating live musicians into their sound, weaving in elements of traditional Cuban music, and they are set to release their debut album "Despierta" ("Wake up") through Emetrece Productions.

Emetrece is run by Melisa Riviere, a Ph.D. candidate in the Anthropology Department at the University of Minnesota. More than just promoting good music, she says Emetrece is trying to educate, and to challenge the U.S. embargo on Cuba.

Like Cuba's rappers, she sees hip hop as a tool for social change. As El B puts it, "I think one of the things people take from the music is the idea that we can do anything, we can change anything, we can be anything we want."

Talib Kweli & DJ Hi Tek on Thisis50

Thisis50 Interview with Talib Kweli & Hi Tek.
They Talk Hip-hop, new album & biggest misconception

Method Man and Redman are hip hop's chameleons

On a hazy soundstage in Midtown, Method Man and Redman, clad in matching powder blue tuxedos, sway in unison in front of a horde of girls as they croon into 50's-style microphones.

Not the kind of music video shoot you'd expect from the hip-hoppers who put rap on the map in the 90's, but for their latest album, "Blackout 2," the titans of the game are changing the face of it yet again.

For their new single, "Mrs. International," the duo wanted a fresh look and feel.

"Honestly, I just want this [album] to be heard. That's all. If you listen to the song that we're doing for the video right now, it's like ‘Is this a Redman and Method Man song?' It doesn't seem like we would ever make a song like this," Method Man said during a break from shooting.

"We're maturing. We evolved and learned a lot more from when we dropped the first album. And the s--- we did in the ‘90's we can't do now," Redman said, changing into a Rick James outfit for the next scene. The album, out on Def Jam on May 19th, is an "intertwining of old school and new school," Redman explains.

"I think our era was one of the best eras in hip hop because it really closed the gap between old school and the new school," he continued. "So with this album, we wanted a bit of that old flair and mixed it in with new, fresh sounds."

The result is a surprisingly pleasant melodic mix of catchy lyrics, head-bopping beats, and hooks that you keep repeating long after hearing them. But just because the sound is new doesn't mean the stars have changed their infamous personas.

The stars of the 2001 film "How High," still maintain their stance on one illegal substance.

"Marijuana has always been that drug that united people. It's always been on the verge of being legal. It's hardly a drug really. When people look at marijuana, they look at it as an enjoyment of connecting," says Redman who's currently pushing for a sequel to their cult stoner flick.

"We're pressing forward with "How High 2," Redman said. "I got the idea right now in my head. But the studios aren't ready to put it out yet ‘cause of money. We shot the first one way under budget. We gave them money back and shot extra scenes! And the movie made money! So I don't know why they ain't giving us another shot. I'm about to go get $20 more million and shoot it myself."

And while hit records and movie deals are certainly in their future, the NYC-area natives always want to remember their past. "You don't want people saying ‘he forgot where he came from.'" said Method Man, born, raised and still living in Staten Island.

"You're not a true emcee unless you can walk on your own block and be respected."

Redman, from Newark, NJ, said the city "keeps me hungry. When you leave New York and go to other places, you appreciate it more when you get back. Here, what you see is what you get. Anybody could get you in NYC. An old lady pushing a shopping cart could shoot you out! You just never know in New York."

Remembering where they came from also means remembering the Wu Tang Clan, which Method Man would like everyone to know is still very much together.

"We never really split up! People need to stop taking s*** out of context. Even Ludacris, who I respect a lot, kind of upset me with a song he had where he mentioned Wu Tang broke up. No, we didn't break up! There has never been an official statement that said ‘We're done' or ‘I'm out.'"

As to what it'll take for the group to put out a new album or tour again, Meth cryptically said, "there're things we've got to take care of first before anybody even starts to discuss that."

In the meantime, "Blackout 2" will be more than enough for their hungry fans to devour.

Rick Ross On Pace For Third Straight Billboard 200 No. 1

Rick Ross is on his way to his third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 as "Deeper Than Rap" looks like it will debut atop the list next week. Industry prognosticators project the Slip-N-Slide/Def Jam album will sell over 150,000 copies in its first week.

Ross' last set, 2008's "Trilla," bowed at No. 1 with 198,000 while 2006's "Port of Miami" also did the same, but with 187,000.

Next week's second-highest debut will either come from Asher Roth's freshman effort "Asleep in the Bread Aisle" (SchoolBoy/Loud/SRC/Universal Motown) with perhaps over 70,000 in its first week or Depeche Mode's "Sounds of the Universe" (Mute/Virgin/Capitol), which is aiming for anywhere between 75,000 to 90,000.

Ross' "Deeper Than Rap" also leads the Nielsen SoundScan Building chart that was released on April 22, which reflected unweighted sales through the close of business on Tuesday, April 21.

Billboard estimates the seven merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart -- Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, iTunes, Starbucks, Borders, Target and Anderson Merchandisers -- comprise about 60% of all U.S. album sales.

Nielsen SoundScan's sales tracking week, as reflected in the official Billboard 200 chart, runs from Monday through Sunday of each week. The newest Billboard 200 chart, released today (April 22) -- where the "Hannah Montana: the Movie" soundtrack climbed to No. 1 with 133,000 -- reflected the week that ended on Sunday, April 19.

Houston, Texas native James Smith brings together “The Geto Boys”. The original lineup consisted of MCs Raheim, Jukebox, DJ Ready Red, and Sir Rap-A-Lot. The group also featured Little Billy, a dancing dwarf who later joined full-time as Bushwick Bill. Following a short break-up in 1988, Smith called on local rhymers Willie D and multi-instrumentalist Akshun (later known as Scarface) to join the lineup.

N.W.A’s follow-up record, 1991’s “Niggaz4Life,” sold 954,000 copies in its first weeks of release to become the first hardcore rap album to hit No. 1 on the charts, despite being banned by some record stores and seized by English authorities as obscene.

Grand Wizard Theodore (DJ Mean Gene’s brother) is the creator of the scratch and needle drop. As the legend goes Theo was at home practicing on his turntables, and created these moves purely by accident. His mom came into his room asking him to turn down the music, and he held the record with his hand. He moved it back and forth and the rest is HipHop history.

Fat Joe Says He Was Unaware Of D.I.T.C. Album

From his debut album, Represent, Fat Joe has always been a member of New York's D.I.T.C. (Diggin' In The Crates) collective. Discovered by Bronx neighbor, Diamond D ,Fat Joe's earliest work sported production from the likes of Showbiz, Lord Finesse and Diamond.

With numerous group appearances scattered throughout the '90s, D.I.T.C. never released an actual album until after the untimely death of Harlem emcee Big L in 2000. Put out through Tommy Boy Records, the self-titled release featured Fat Joe on the cover, alongside O.C., A.G., Lord Finesse, Buckwild, Diamond D, Showbiz and the late Big L. Joe appeared on two of the album's songs, "Da Enemy" and "Way of Life."

In subsequent years, Fat Joe has represented his collective in interviews, as well as on albums, mixtapes and compilations from Diamond D, Showbiz as well as putting production on his recent albums from Buckwild.

Still, in an interview published today by Complex.com , the Bronx rapper was unaware of his bandmates releasing 2008's The Movement. "I didn’t even realize that happened, to tell you the truth. I never heard it. Who’s on it? Maybe it was a remake or something like that," said Joe, asked of why he did not appear on the project released on D.I.T.C. Records. Diamond was also absent from the release.

Joe spoke of that time in his career further, "That’s a different time in Hip Hop. That’s the motivating time. That was the time where everybody supports each other. Diggin' In The Crates never disrespected each other. We always motivated each other and helped each other. That’s a whole new category with this new school bullshit. With loyalty and shit like that. With Diggin' In The Crates and myself, it’s all about the music."

The interviewer also asked Fat Joe his opinion of nemesis 50 Cent's debut Get Rich Or Die Trying. Joe replied, "I refuse to comment on that. Because ask him if he thinks any of my songs were phenomenal hits or whatever. I can’t comment on a person who won’t comment on me in a positive light. So I wouldn’t be true to a comment if I answer that question."

Fat Joe's J.O.S.E. 2 is presently set for May 19 release.

Plies Compiles A Collabo Wish List For New LP, Including Jadakiss

'I'm putting together something that's real, real special,' the Florida MC says.
Plies' new single "Plenty Money" drops soon and, after that, he's going to shift his focus to a whole new album that he hopes to have out in late summer or early fall. But, unlike his previous three LPs, the Florida native will have guest rappers on this project — and he already has a handful of MCs in mind.

"Actually, right now I got a list of five," he revealed to MTV News recently. "I ain't really gonna go over that five in terms of this particular project, 'cause I don't want a compilation album. I know a lot of times I see a lot of artists that come out and they got people on their album that collectively may have sold 20 million records. And at that point, I don't really know if it's about you, but it allows you to tap into other people's markets that probably wouldn't have been checking for you. And for me, I just want to make good music.

"But in terms of the top five that I got on there, that's one of the things I wanted to be a big surprise," he continued. "But I'm going into every session that I have had with all these other artists and I'm putting together something that's real, real special that I'm releasing probably the first week in June. Letting everybody know the top five, doing a countdown of all the artists I'm working with on this album."

The featured guests hail from all over the map. "I got up top, got Atlanta, got Memphis — got two from Atlanta, actually," he explained. "And one from Memphis. I ain't got my New York artist yet, 'cause I got two that I'm a really big fan of."

Actually, Plies has three Big Apple spitters he's thinking about reaching out to for his album. "I've always told him that I was open about being a big supporter of Jadakiss," Plies said of the LOX member. "I met him in Philly, but like I told him, I was f---ing with him for a while. I never forget the line he used about how he was 'the first man to cook base on a Foreman grill.' That was the sh--! And then I'm a big Maino fan, as well as [Fabolous]. Those three dudes I always f--- with."

There is also talk about collaborating with big-name producers such as Timbaland on the new album, which is currently untitled.

Eminem Posts Relapse Cover Art On Twitter

Never one to employ subtlety when a sledgehammer will do, Eminem released the cover art to his upcoming Relapse album through his Twitter account on Tuesday (April 21).

The image that will grace the MC's first disc of new material in more than four years features a headshot of Slim Shady staring out with eyes narrowed composed entirely of thousands of pills. The not-at-all-veiled nod to the rapper's struggle with addiction to prescription medication is in keeping with Em's career-long habit of putting his personal struggles on display in his art, from his problems with twice-ex-wife Kimberley Mathers to his disputes with his mother and beating at the hands of a bully in high school.

The iconic backward E that has been a part of Em's graphic persona makes another appearance in the lower right-hand corner at the end of the album's title in a sticker made up to look like the label on a pill bottle. It lists the patient's name as Mathers, Marshall, with an address in his old stomping grounds, Detroit's 8 Mile Road, and counsels him to take one tablet once a day at 3 a.m.

The refill date on the prescription reads 5-19-09, the album's release date, and the prescribing doctor is, of course, Em's mentor and beatmaster, Dr. Dre. In a recent cover-story interview with XXL magazine, Em explained that the death of best friend and D12 member Proof in 2006 was part of what put him on a downward spiral of prescription drugs after he'd already visited rehab to work on an addiction to sleeping medication that scuttled his 2005 European tour.

"I think it kind of hit me so hard," Em told the magazine about Proof's shooting death in a Detroit bar. "It just blindsided me. I just went into such a dark place that, with everything, the drugs, my thoughts, everything. And the more drugs I consumed — and it was all depressants I was taking — the more depressed I became, the more self-loathing I became."

The cover has a decidedly more serious look than the first video for the album, the celeb-slamming "We Made You," which has drawn fire from right-wing talking head Bill O'Reilly for its digs at former Republican vice-presidential candidate Governor Sarah Palin. Relapse will be followed by a sequel album tentatively slotted for later this year titled Relapse 2.
