Andre 3000's 'Good Deed': Helping To Bring The Seattle Riots To The Big Screen

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Picture this: Eminem vs. Andre 3000 in a dream face-off of legendary lyricists. Put the whole thing on film, shoot it in the home of grunge rock and call it "8 Mile 2: The Battle in Seattle."

OK, not quite.

But the Outkast rapper did think his agent was handing him a script for a musical of sorts when he first heard about his upcoming film.

"When I saw the title 'Battle in Seattle,' I thought it was catchy," André Benjamin told us last week. "I thought, 'Hey, this may be some kind of rap movie.' You know, they want some kind of battle. They want me to do the kind of '8 Mile' battle thing. 'Cause that's the roles they give to rappers anyway. So once I read it, I was like, 'Hey, OK, this is something serious.' And then, the bigger picture, it was something I didn't know about. I knew if I didn't know about it, I knew a lot of people didn't know about it. So I said, 'Let me bring this to the world ... through my people, through people in the rap world.' So at that point, I felt like I was doing a good deed bringing light to it."

The film centers on the 1999 Seattle riots, which started out as peaceful protests against the World Trade Organization and turned into full-scale chaos. Benjamin stars with Ray Liotta, Woody Harrelson and Charlize Theron, among others.

"I was kinda ashamed that I didn't know anything about it," Benjamin explained. "I just felt like me being a part of it would bring a certain audience to it. It's about the riots that took place in '99, when pretty much the whole world protested the WTO. They pulled it off. They were strategic about it. They called it a riot because there were a couple of things that went down that were unfortunate. But pretty much everything was not breaking the law, and they did it smartly.

"I play a protester by the name of Django," he added. "He's pretty much bringing light to the subject. I guess people look at protesting and feel like, of course, it's heavy. You got issues and all this kind of stuff. But my character is the person that keeps everybody on the up-and-up and alive and laughing. Even when we're locked up, I'm always making jokes and trying to keep it together."

"Battle in Seattle" is headed to theaters September 19. Andre 3000's next album is coming to stores on ... well, that's yet to be determined.

"On the movie front, right now I'm reading scripts," he said. "I've been spending a lot of time working on the next music project, which will be my album. I can say I don't know what it's going to sound like. I can say I know what the message is already. I know what the vibe is. I'm just now really getting into it. Right now, I'm in support of Big Boi's album coming out right, Sir Luscious Left Foot. Go pick it up. Then after that, if God's willing, we'll do another Outkast album. I've been overseas working on this new, exciting clothing company called Benjamin Bigsby that's in stores right now. And that's been taking a lot of my time. But I'm really passionate about it, and I love doing it. It's been one of the most challenging things I've ever done, but I've loved clothes since I was a kid."

S.A.S. Talks Juelz Santana Robbery, Breaks From Dip Set

Ties have disconnected between Dip Set’s Juelz Santana and former Dip Set members, Mega and Mayhem (S.A.S.). The abrupt end to the business and personal relationship between UK’s duo and Dip Set’s Santana followed an incident that took place in the UK on August 31st, where promoters and a large crew of 30-40 followers surrounded the hotel Santana resided in, allegedly requesting money owed from Santana’s previous manager, Big Joe, for unfulfilled contract obligations which included 70,000 pounds, allegedly stolen from the promoters for two of Juelz’s performances that never took place.

Santana concluded a two-week European tour where he and S.A.S. touched the stage in various venues including Amsterdam, Sweden, and Switzerland. The night prior to the last scheduled performance the promoters and their entourage requested for Juelz to leave his hotel room and negotiate the fulfillment of former contractual obligations. Juelz allegedly refused to do so, as he requested police escorts.

Upon witnessing the commotion appearing in front of the hotel, S.A.S. made arrangements for Santana to be escorted out of the hotel. “Being it is our city, Mega and I went down by ourselves to settle and hopefully resolve the situation,” states May. “The Mob seemed like it had left due to the police presence outside and inside the hotel (some were taking down license plates). All our people started to get impatient waiting for Juelz to come out because they felt like they were under police surveillance. Half of them left because with police there, it didn't seem like anything was going down.”

S.A.S. had reportedly spoken to Big Joe in regards to the owed money. “We got into a verbal and almost physical dispute with Big Joe. The two shows and 70,000 pounds was brought to Juelz’s attention but no one got the money off of Big Joe or tried to contact the promoters in the UK but us,” says May. “You have to understand, that’s an ’04 show, and Juelz is coming in ’08. A lot of weed has been consumed in four years and a lot of things [were] forgotten,” adds May.

Upon his return to the States, Santana made a video alleging his former friends’ disloyalty and incompetence, which was a surprise to the UK Hip Hop duo. “We've known him for five years, lived in his house, and know his mother very well so we didn't understand the subliminal [messages] on the footage,” May told HipHopDX today. “All I can say is, we've known him way too long for him not to call us and tell us how he felt about the situation. Rappers talking shit about other rappers on DVD is something we always use to agree was 'bait' (corny). Now all of sudden he's doing that to his so-called boys.”

Despite Juelz’ video mockeries, rumors are circulating in spite of Santana’s braggadocio-embedded presence on wax, and in support of a feeble rapper . “We heard a lot of rumors of how they took a chain and made him sign a free three show contract but that's just speculation [so far],” May reveals to DX.
